A word from the Philadelphia Horse Training Examiner:
Horses can be one of the most dangerous animals. They can kill you in an instant, accidently or intentionally.
Stallions are the most dangerous of the three sexes (stallions, geldings and mares). Viewing two stallions fighting can give you an idea of how powerful, calculative, intelligent and dangerous they are. They are very prone to attempting to dominate their handlers and trainers. This is where most of the danger of working with a stallion comes in. Geldings and mares can rarely become dangerous to a human and if they are so, it is probably from mismanagement. When they are handled wrongly, they can become too dangerous for a general person to work with.
Never let any horse dominate you and/or make decisions concerning you- letting the horse be the one in charge will cause it to act aggressively toward you. Owners make the mistake of thinking that letting the horse do what it pleases in their presence will bring it comfort. That vital mistake will bring the animal misery. It will lead to it becoming a dangerous animal that will have to be handled more firmly forever after. In this instance it is cruel to be too kind.
