A tribute to single moms

If you have a great mother, there is nothing in this world like it. The relationship between mother and child is unique and precious. It is priceless. If your father is an equal participant in your life then that makes your parental relationship that much stronger and valuable. But this article is for mothers who take care of their families on their own. Sure, they might have support from other family members and even the children's father, but these mothers are the backbone of their household and they hold down the fort. For Mother's Day, I would like to dedicate this article to all mothers across the world who are single or divorced and who raise their children with dignity and respect.

Single mothers have a 24 hour job as a caregiver without any compensation, only benefits. Single mothers are chauffeurs, cooks, stylists, beauticians, maids, housekeepers, launders, teachers, nurses, mediators, nutritionists, ATM machines, and the list goes on and on. In the U.S. studies show that the number of families headed by single moms has tripled.

We are all aware of the negative aspects of single parenting: the lack of a two-parent income, shared responsibilities, father-child relationships, blah, blah, blah. However, there are some very positive aspects of being a single mom that you can feel proud of and they are as follows:

1. All decisions fall on you.
2. You receive the benefits of a special and close bond.
3. You introduce the child to spiritual and religious growth.
4. When your child eats ice-cream, you can too!
5. You are given the privilege and blessing of teaching, training, and molding a child into the best he/she can be.
6. And the list goes on…

I know it sounds cliché, but if anything good ever comes of this world, it is because that good comes from a good home. Sow good seeds into your child so that your child will never forget your teachings and you will be honored for your work for generations to come. Be empowered!
