A therapy dog's first visit helps you discover the best in your dog

Kirby passed his Delta Society test and was now ready to go to work as an animal-assisted therapy dog.

He had a bath and full groom. He had a good breakfast and was excited to go in the car.

He sat quietly for the entire ride but about a block from the facility, his ears perked up and he seemed to know we were getting close.

We walked into the hobby and something changed. He was no longer his unusually calm, docile self. He wagged his tail, went up to people for a tickle and a pet, had a little hop in his step and sat down right in front of a lovely gentleman in his wheelchair.

For months I wondered if this was to be in his future. Some dogs are naturally effusive and appear to be great candidates for therapy work. Kirby was not one of those dogs.

While he was friendly, he did not run up to people or seek out hugs and kisses. After six months living with Kirby, I now knew what was missing – people who needed him.

Kirby’s approach to people was subtle and tender. He happily was passed from lap to lap and looked everyone straight in the eye and reached into their soul. This funny looking little dog with the crooked smile found what he was looking for – a purpose.

That first visit was a great success, for Kirby, the staff, myself and most importantly for the patients.

When working with teams learning to be therapy teams, I often tell them to be patient and discover the essence of their dog and appreciate his talents and uniqueness.

And recognize when your dog and those he visits are the perfect match.
