Invariably, you noticed that your child’s homework and assignments are not reflective of the Common Core State Standard. What do you do? Do you: a) ignore the problem and hope it will resolve on its own b) withdraw your child and home school c) a, b and c d) none of the above. The correct answer is none of the above.
Do something
If you are not pleased with the academic work your child is receiving first go to Engage New York and compare the assignments with the online resources. If they do not match up call and request a parent teacher conference. Be sure to print the resources as a point of reference for your child’s teacher.
The meeting
Words are very important and what you say and the way you say it can mean success or failure. Therefore, any communication with your child’s teacher should be tapered to your child’s grade work and aptitude. Never make it personal, the focus should always be on how best to help your child satisfy academic expectations.
Catch-up
At the beginning of the school year teachers require room to grow, the opportunity to review or reintroduce the class to past subjects and concepts. Contingent on the size and aptitude of the class this can be accomplished in a day, a week or a month. Good teachers will not introduce a new subject unless the students are ready capable.
In your conversation with your child’s teacher if you find that the teacher is indeed doing catch up, then ask for recommended at home work to prepare your child for the new semester work.
