Saturday, January 19 will mark the newest installment of the celebrated Greenville News Downtown Run. The event itself dates back to 1980 when it was known as The Greenville News-Piedmont 10K Road Race. From 1993 to 1998 it went simply by the Greenville News 10K Road Race and was presented by Bi-Lo in 1999 and 2000. The race was reduced to a 5K in 2001 as it was renamed The Greenville News Southern Connector 5K before going by its current and most recognizable name in 2002.
For the past 33 winters, the event has been a hallmark of the South Carolina Upstate running scene, attracting talented athletes from around the state and Southeast region. The Downtown Run also serves as the preliminary event in the Greenville Track Club’s annual Run In Running Series (see more: http://gvltrackclub.clubexpress.com/content.aspx?page_id=22&club_id=5153...) and Corporate Series program (http://gvltrackclub.clubexpress.com/content.aspx?page_id=22&club_id=5153...).
The race is also the only 5K that has a significant part of the course run down the Main Street of Greenville- a downtown that Forbes ranked in the top 10 of America’s Best Downtowns.
The course will again start in the heart of Greenville, in front of Soby's Restaurant and finish at the Greenville News Building on Main Street.
