Winter is officially here in sunny Southern California's San Bernardino County. As the days inevitably grow shorter and the frigid nights become much longer, we find ourselves craving those strong ales that enlightened our palates last winter.
Somehow, summer seems too distant and the beers of those long, warm days find themselves strangely out of place on a cold winter's eve. For a craft beer connoisseur, it can be hard to imagine sitting in front of the fireplace, watching the snow flurries outside while drinking a nice refreshing Weizenbier.
No, this is the time of year that barrel aged beers, Stouts, Porters, Barleywines and anything with Imperial in the name come out to play.
For a deeper look into one of these amazing seasonal ales, let us turn our heads to a local brewery located right in the middle of our own backyard, Hangar 24 Craft Brewery in Redlands, Ca.
Hangar 24 produces some exceptional special release beers, aptly referred to as the 'Barrel Roll' series, and this winter's release is no exception. The much anticipated upcoming release happens to be a Russian Imperial Stout named Pugachev's Cobra. A massive beer in every sense with a hefty 16.5% alcohol content, this beer is not for the faint of heart.
According to the brewery's website, Pugachev's Cobra is brewed with three kinds of dark roasted malt and given a dose of maple syrup for complexity before being aged in bourbon barrels for eight months.
One thing is certain, if the quality of this beer is anything like the previous releases in the Barrel Roll series, palates will not be dissapointed. A big, complex ale such a this Russian Imperial Stout from Hangar 24 is definitely a slow sipping beer meant to be enjoyed with like-minded friends and family, and is sure to be a winter warmer for those long, cold nights in front of a crackling fireplace.
Presales for Pugachev's Cobra start December 7th at the Hangar 24 tasting room, with a release date of December 10th, three days later.
