As winter passed and the flowers of spring were starting to bloom, so was our little girl. Her first vacation was to the Catskill Mountains to visit her "cousins", the Bassett Boys. Her connection with other dogs was evident. This was the only world she ever knew. It was as though they all spoke a secret language. She was confident and happy in the company of other dogs. It was people that she still feared. Afterall, this little girl spent the first ten years of her life in a cage devoid of any love.
She embraced her time in the Catskills and we loved watching her experience new things. She loved to feel the breeze on her face. She loved the long walks along the paths with her "cousins". She was beginning to love life...finally.
There were times like this that we felt she was leaving the horrible memories of a "mill" dog behind. But too often those times were overcome with the fear that we saw in her eyes when she would encounter someone that she didn't know. Remembering that fear is heartbreaking, but with continued love and compassion and understanding what she was going through, the bad memories were replaced with happy times. And, so our journey continues ...
