Critically acclaimed musical powerhouse “The Secret Garden” opens Friday, April 11, and runs through Sunday, May 11, at the Arizona Broadway Theatre, 7701 W. Paradise Lane, Peoria, Ariz. The three-time Tony Award-winning production is based on the 1911 novel by Frances Hodgson Burnett and is known for its rich score and haunting melodies, composed by Lucy Simon. When Mary Lennox is suddenly orphaned and sent to live with her reclusive Uncle Archibald on his mysterious English estate, she is drawn to a neglected garden on the grounds and discovers the magic and secrets within.
“Upon hearing the lush and sophisticated score, it will be clear why “The Secret Garden” is on so many people’s list of favorite musicals,” said Andy Meyers, who will be directing the production. “The themes of loss, love and discovery are timeless and relatable,” he added. “You can not help but feel the emotions being delivered by these incredible performers.”
Meyers has directed “Seven Brides for Seven Brothers” and “Winter Wonderettes” at ABT previously and has performed in “Kiss Me, Kate.” For “Secret Garden,” he guides a stellar cast of 24 professional performers, including six children.
Three young Valley performers will share the role of Mary Lennox on the ABT stage: Madeline Alfano, Morgan Goldberg and Lizzie Tuten. Christian Bader, Tommy Cimato and Asher Angel will share the role of Colin Craven.
Leading the adult performances is Kaitlynn Kleinman in the role of Lily. She has also appeared on the ABT stage in “Into the Woods.” ABT newcomer Matthew Charles Thompson portrays Uncle Archibald Craven, and Jesse Berger returns to ABT as Dr. Neville Craven, Archibald’s brother. He previously appeared in “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” and “9 to 5.” To review a complete cast list, click here.
