Colton's Point resident, Dr. Robert L Jefferson is touring with his new musical presentation "A Spiritual Journey." "A Spiritual Journey" has been overwhelmingly received by audiences all across Maryland. Dr. Jefferson performs the spirituals with a traditional yet contemporary flair to bring the listener right into the actual experience of the music.

There are 14-15 songs in the presentation, from Dr. Jefferson's own arrangements and other arrangers such as Hogan and Burleigh. The performance time is approximately a little over an hour. The presentation offers an experiential interpretation of Spirituals which includes narration and songs tracing the history of the African American from pre-slavery through emancipation. Dr. Jefferson’s piano and vocals leave the listeners captivated, emotionally moved, and spiritually uplifted.

Dr. Jefferson believes that the best way to learn the heart of a people is through their music. He says, "The history of the people is in the music and the history of the music is in the people."

Although Spirituals are often performed on choral concerts and in concert halls throughout the world, the origins and history behind this great American musical art form has often been neglected. Therefore, performances of this music often lack the emotional depth and vibrancy which inspired their original conception.

Dr. Jefferson explores the interpretation of Spirituals from an “inside” perspective by offering listeners an experiential historical background of the African-American Spiritual. Having recently attended one of Dr Jefferson's performance at Glenelg United Methodist Church in Glenelg, Maryland it was fantastic!! Throughout the entire concert I heard the sounds of rhythm & blues, jazz, hymns, soul, gospel, and anthems.

I highly recommend that you attend his next concert at the Lutheran Church of St Andrews, 15300 New Hampshire Ave, Silver Spring, Maryland 20905 on Sunday, September 21st, 2014 at 3:00pm.
