One of the first concerts to be offered at the Center for New Music next month will have the somewhat unlikely title New Music for Snare Drum. The event is being curated by composer Jen Wang, one of the founders of Wild Rumpus; and the program will be a solo snare drum recital. The recitalist will be Joseph Van Hassel, currently at the School of Music of Ohio University. The program will feature two world premieres, one by Berkeley-born David Macbride and the other by San Francisco native Janis Mercer. Other works will be by Oakland native (and co-founder of Wild Rumpus) Dan VanHassel and Allen Otte, one of the founding members of the Percussion Group Cincinnati. Performance styles will include the use of fixed and interactive electronics.

This performance will take place at the Center for New Music, 55 Taylor Street (about half a block north of the corner of Market Street). It will begin at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 4. Tickets are $15 with a $10 rate for members of the Center. Information about membership may be found on the Membership Web page of the Center’s Web site.
