A snowstorm, tornadoes, and an ice jam top the list of Michigan weather events on this day in history. From the National Weather Service archives here are the weather events that happened on April 2.

1975 - A snowstorm hit Southeast Michigan and continued into the 3rd. By the time it was over, Flint had its second biggest snowstorm when 17.3” fell. Saginaw received 14.4”, making that storm the 9th biggest in Saginaw history. Even Detroit received 3.6” of snow from the storm. Daily snowfall records were set in West Michigan with Grand Rapids receiving 7.8”, Muskegon 7.3”, and Lansing 9.9”.

1977 - A tornado outbreak in southern Lower Michigan kills one person and injures about 50 others. One thunderstorm spawned two violent tornadoes in Kalamazoo and Eaton Counties. Several homes and businesses were destroyed on the southwest edge of Augusta by the first tornado. The second tornado destroyed 21 homes and 28 outbuildings as it moved from near Bellevue to Eaton Rapids. Other tornadoes hit near north of Bath in Clinton County and southeast of Dansville in Ingham County. An F2 tornado also hit Livingston County at 3:58PM.

1990 - A storm system produced snow and gale force winds across northern Michigan, with 8.3” of snow reported at Marquette.

2005 - In the morning, an ice jam 200 to 300 feet in length formed on the Rapid River three miles north of Rapid River, MI. Minor flooding occurred in the Rapid River and Maplewood areas with water flowing over Highway US-2 in Rapid River. Around noon on the 3rd, an excavator was used to break up the ice jam, and within a few hours, flood waters had receded.

2010 - Record high temperatures were recorded across Michigan including Grand Rapids with 83°, Muskegon 78°, Alpena 83°, Houghton Lake 81°, Marquette 75° and Sault Ste. Marie 77°. This was just the start to a very warm April. It is the warmest April on record for Muskegon. Grand Rapids ties 1896 as the 2nd warmest April.
