A snowstorm, a shipwreck, and chilly air top the list of Michigan weather events on this day in history. From the National Weather Service archives here are the events that happened on May 22.

1883 - A very late season snowstorm hit Detroit with five inches of snow accumulating during the overnight hours.

1904 – Muskegon observes their greatest daily precipitation for month of May with 4.10”.

1917 - Cold rain mixes with snow and temperatures rise only to the lower 40s after morning lows in the lower 30s. Grand Rapids sees a record low of 34°. Even more cities see records for chilly high temperatures. These include Grand Rapids with a high of only 42°, Muskegon 45°, Lansing 42°, Alpena 40°, and Houghton Lake 38°. Alpena records 4” of snow on this chilly day in May.

1963 - Snowflakes fall at Lansing as morning low temperatures in the 30s only rise to the mid and upper 40s.

1945 - The diesel tug Eddie S. foundered in a sudden 55mph squall near the harbor mouth of Grand Marais, MI in Lake Superior. The one surviving crewman was saved by the USCG. 2 of 3 crew members perished.
