Today, the gauntlet was thrown down by Apple with the introduction of the iPhone 5S. Some were naturally not exactly impressed by today's announcement, and failed to see how important the innovations that the iPhone 5S packs.
While many have expectations of the phone to absolutely pop with some unheard of gadget or something special, today marks two significant aspects that will be the buzz for the next 3-5 years. Namely fingerprint recognition and 64 bit smartphone computing.
Imagine being able to lock your phone and only YOU can get in. That is the new reality. Fingerprint security will also bleed over into other technologies where you can buy from the iTunes store and authenticate with just your print. Other apps and checkouts will soon employ the technology which is sure to bring a smile to the faces of frequent shoppers.
Most important today is the advent of 64 bit computing on a phone. When 64 bit was introduced into the personal computer world, it significantly changed operating systems, programs, games and speeds. Yes, all important speed. Today, as an effect we can see Windows load in less than 1 minute on boot, the same as Apple has enjoyed on their iOS for years.
This massive speed boost - doubling over the last model of iPhone 5 is quite impressive. What too is impressive is that the performance will not hurt battery life. That will maintain a 10 hour talk time, and equally impressive browsing and music playing abilities as previously experienced on slower equipment.
A new video graphics processor will also boost speeds up to 56 times faster than previously experienced. This can have a major impact on game play, and future iterations of difficult applications.
While many have exceptional expectations of Apple, it is apparent that with the innovations introduced today that they were able to step up and push the envelope. While the exterior has changed little, inside packs a mighty punch.
