A simple way to teach children generosity

Was Santa good to your kids this year?  Most parents find their children’s closets and toy boxes running over come January.  Now is the time to encourage a little generosity at your house.  You can purge the toys and clothes no longer needed by your family and help someone else at the same time.

This can be a great teachable moment with your children as you make room for new things in their drawers.  Share with your children that not all families are as fortunate as yours. Encourage them to choose which things they no longer wear or play with to donate to another child.

If your family knows of another family in need, through your school or church, that is a great place to start.  You might even set up an “exchange” bulletin board where individuals can list items to donate or items which his or her family may need.

Another great idea is to donate classroom appropriate games or puzzles to your child’s school or church.  Teachers are always looking for these items to use for classroom free-time.
