A shipwreck, record heat and eighteen days of rain top the list of Michigan weather events on this day in history. From the National Weather Service archives here are the weather events that happened on April 22.

1875 - Detroit had a record low temperature 20°. The day before, on the 21st, Detroit had another record low of 21°. In Lansing they observe a record low of 21° on this day and just one day earlier they had another record low of 15°.

1893 - The wood schooner M.L. Collins, while carrying lumber, went aground in a gale and broke up before she could be released at Waugoschance Point in the western Straits of Mackinac in Lake Michigan.

1960 - This was the beginning of an 18 day period of rain in Marquette where 11 inches of precipitation would fall which would culminate in a tremendous rain/snowstorm the first week in May.

1976 - A tornado damaged several homes northeast of Burlington in Calhoun County.

1980 - A record April heat wave sent the mercury into the 90s across the Midwest. In Michigan, Grand Rapids and Lansing both see a record high of 86°. Detroit hits a record 87°, Houghton Lake 86°, and Marquette 92°. For Marquette, this is the warmest April temperature on record. The next day, the temperature fell to 21° for a low temperature in Marquette. In the Upper Peninsula on the 22nd, Alberta, Baraga and Iron Mountain had high temperatures of 94° and Big Bay, Champion, Crystal Falls and Stambaugh topped out at 92°, Herman and Stephenson had a high of 91°.

1985 – In the Upper Peninsula, flooding cancelled school in Gwinn.

1999 – Record rain falls across West Michigan. Grand Rapids records 1.72”, Muskegon 1.05”, Lansing 1.47”, and Flint 1.75”.
