It's spring, and you know what that means, Saint Louis. Not horribly violent storms, although there is that. No, it's time for the local alternative publication, the Riverfront Times, to release their list of nominees for the 2014 RFT Music Awards. And the list is quite a doozy.
The RFT Music Awards is an annual event in which the Riverfront Times honors local artists of all kinds and genres. According to the main RFT article, all nominees are are chosen by those in Saint Louis who work every day with musicians or live for music in general, like workers at record stores and local music nerds. The winners are chosen by the magazine's readers.
This year, there are twenty-eight different categories of musicians up for an RFT Music Award, and each category has five artists to its name. They cover the broad range of musicians that call Saint Louis home, from electronic and rock to blues and jazz and everything in between. Some names should be familiar to Examiner readers, such as Doorway, Illphonics and Dots Not Feathers.
Some names are more national than others. Dedicated fans of NBC's "The Voice" will no doubt recognize Theresa Payne's name. She entered into the blind auditions for the sixth and currently airing season with Beyonce's "Crazy In Love" but was not able to win the love of the judges.
A good amount of the nominated artists will be performing at the upcoming RFT Music Showcase on June 7. This year, the Showcase will be taking place in the Grove district of Manchester Avenue. Originally, the Showcase has been held in the Delmar Loop for the past several years.
Riverfront Times readers will not have to wait long to vote on their favorites. The polls for all categories of the 2014 RFT Music Awards will officially be open in early May.
