A Scarlet Cord of Hope; My Journey through Guilt, Shame, and Fear to Hope
By Sheryl Griffin
Westview, Inc.
Racing heart. Nausea. Disoriented. Waves of Heat. Shortness of breath. At first, Sheryl Griffin thought she was coming down with the flu; as the symptoms intensified, she was certain she was dying. After several doctors’ visits, she was diagnosed with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. It’s no surprise that she would have what is generally associated with soldiers returning from battle or other catastrophic situations. In her debut book, A Scarlet Cord of Hope, Sheryl bravely shares her story with the hope that others will find love, mercy, forgiveness and hope.
Sheryl’s story begins with her birth to alcoholic parents. As a young child, she remembers sitting in another room, listening to her parents’ arguments, and certain somehow it was all her fault. When she was five years old, her parents divorced. From that moment, Sheryl was the center of a tug-of-war between parents who used whatever weapon to convince the little girl that her other parent was bad and she would be happier with them.
It isn’t surprising that Sheryl grew up craving love wherever she could find it; and she thought she found it in marriage. Instead of a happily-ever-after, life repeated itself in the arms of a controlling, abusive, alcoholic husband. Once again, Sheryl was certain the hell she was living in was her own fault.
Simply written, A Scarlet Cord of Hope is nevertheless bold and hones. In this quick-read book, Sheryl opens a vein and pours out her life, the good and the bad. She concludes each chapter with a “What I Know Now” wrap-up, exposing the lies she believed, offering advice, and shining the Word of God on it all. This book is a lifeline for those who are living with panic and anxiety attacks, or are in a chokehold of guilt, shame, and fear.
