The Oakland Athletics are sending six players to Minneapolis—the most of all the teams. Third baseman Josh Donaldson was voted by the fans to start the game, while pitchers Scott Kazmir and Sean Doolittle, catcher Derek Norris, first baseman Brandon Moss, and outfielder Yoenis Cespedes were selected to the roster. Newly-acquired pitcher Jeff Samardzjia was also voted to the National League roster as a member of the Chicago Cubs and will remain on the All-Star team, but will be ineligible to play since he was traded to the American League.

“I won’t get to pitch, which is a bummer, but that’s alright,” Samardzjia said after earning his first win in an Oakland uniform. “I’ll just go through whatever ceremonies they have and then jump over to the A.L. dugout with an N.L. jersey on and have some fun with the six other dudes we have over there.”

Oakland has not had six players represent the team in the All-Star Game since 1975, when there were seven Athletics on the team.

“This is great just to be represented by so many guys on this team,” Donaldson said. “I feel like it’s very deserving and it’s a pretty special moment for each and every one of us. I’ve been saying this for years, that we have guys on this team that are very talented and that eventually you’re going to see the hard work that we put in pay off. And I think you’ve seen that by our record the past few years.”

The San Francisco Giants will send two players, pitcher Madison Bumgarner and outfielder Hunter Pence, to the Midsummer Classic.

“I’m tremendously grateful. I feel very fortunate to have this opportunity,” Pence said. “I try my best to never take a single game for granted because it has been a dream since I was a kid to play in the Major Leagues.”

The All-Star Game will be played on Tuesday, July 15, at Target Field in Minneapolis.
