The Miami New Times reported today that an anti-aging clinic in Coral Gables, Biogenesis, has been providing N.Y. Yankees’ third baseman Alex Rodriguez and other big names in sports with performance-enhancing drugs (PEDs) for at least the last four years.
Specifically, the main supplier of the drug to the sports stars was reported to be the man who runs the clinic, Anthony Bosch.
A former Biogenesis employee supplied The Miami New Times with Bosch’s supposed handwritten records detailing many of the purchases made by not only A-Rod but also Nelson Cruz, Melky Cabrera , and more.
Alex Rodriguez appears 16 times in the documents we reviewed. His name is recorded as "Alex Rod" or "Alex R." or by his nickname at the clinic, "Cacique." This is particularly interesting because on ESPN, he acknowledged using PEDs but said he stopped in 2003.
An Alex Rodriguez spokesperson released the following statement via the MLB:
"The news report about a purported relationship between Alex Rodriguez and Anthony Bosch are not true. Alex Rodriguez was not Mr. Bosch's patient, he was never treated by him and he was never advised by him.
The purported documents referenced in the story ‐‐ at least as they relate to Alex Rodriguez ‐‐ are not legitimate."
The MLB released its own statement saying that they’re "always extremely disappointed to learn of potential links between players and the use of performance-enhancing substances," noting that MLB's Department of Investigations has "been actively involved in the issues in South Florida."
Although no stranger to controversy due to past performance-enhancing drug use, gambling allegations, having an affair with Madonna, and ending his slugging season last summer in a slump - there is no evidence available that Rodriguez tested positive for any illegal drugs during recent tests administered by the MLB.
