A return to barbarism

“The organization of a community for the spread and practice of polygamy is, in a measure, a return to barbarism. It is contrary to the spirit of Christianity and of the civilization which Christianity had produced in the Western world.” – Supreme Court ruling in The Late Corporation of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints v. United States

According to Old Testament theology, the Hebrew nation was kept in captivity in Egypt for 400 years because the sins of the Canaanites were not great enough to release God’s judgment upon them until then. But when Canaan finally reached the moment where they became decadent beyond redemption they were ripe to be conquered by the Hebrew nation, which God had been preparing not far away in Egypt for generations.

Regardless of what Barack Obama says, this great nation was founded on Judeo-Christian principles. Those principles state that as long as a nation upholds the laws of our creator (natural law), that nation will be secure. But when the people turn away from those precepts, they are in danger of being overrun by their enemies.

The enemies of the United States are legion, attacking from outside and from within our borders. The attacks from within are most egregious because they have been incremental; happening so slowly that most of our citizens haven’t been aware that we are falling into decadence.

Let’s draw a corollary between Canaan and our nation today.

The citizens of Canaan engaged on the most barbaric practices in the region. They included slaughtering their children as sacrifices to their gods, temple prostitution, homosexuality, bestiality, mayhem, murder, and excessive violence among their citizens.

Sound familiar?

I remember, in the fifties, television stations played public service announcements that said, “A family that prays together, stays together. Attend the church of synagogue of your choice.” The fifties decade brought us family friendly programming like, Father Knows Best, Leave it to Beaver, and Ozzie and Harriet. TV programs never showed two people in the same bed. Even married people had twin beds in their bedrooms.

Today, religious Christians and Jews are ridiculed. Morality is relative. Sexual activity is in the forefront in the majority of TV programming, even during the prime-time family viewing hours. Homosexuality is not only present, it is celebrated.

The most-viewed websites on the internet are porn sites. Same-sex marriage is on the verge of being legalized nationally. Standing in the wings are polygamist groups who want their seat at the table.

In a once-prosperous nation that was the envy of the free world, one-in-six citizens now live below the poverty level. Nearly half are on some kind of federal assistance program. Millions of workers have fallen off the grid as they have given up trying to be productive. Too many of us have traded our dignity for a few meager handouts from Uncle Sam.

Our cities have become centers of violence, crime, and mayhem. Major cities like Chicago, Detroit, and even our nation’s capitol, Washington D.C. have alarming murder rates. Too often we hear of mass shootings in public places. More than ever, our law-abiding citizens feel a need to carry weapons for protection. Even county sheriffs are encouraging people to carry guns because law enforcement can no longer protect them.

To date we have sacrificed over fifty-million unborn babies on the altar of convenience. And recently the nation’s largest abortion provider, Planned Parenthood (which receives government funding) has stated that it is now all right to kill a baby after it is born if the mother intended it to die.

In Abraham’s second inaugural, in reference to God’s judgment regarding slavery, he said, “Fondly do we hope -- fervently do we pray -- that this mighty scourge of war may speedily pass away. Yet, if God wills that it continue, until all the wealth piled by the bond-man's two hundred and fifty years of unrequited toil shall be sunk, and until every drop of blood drawn with the lash, shall be paid by another drawn with the sword, as was said three thousand years ago, so still it must be said "the judgments of the Lord, are true and righteous altogether."

21st Century America is at war. The two sides are divided by political ideology. One side clings to the decoration of Independence, our Constitution, and faith in reverence to our creator.

The other side holds that the state is our divine authority. These statists strive to enslave the people by making them dependent on government for every necessity of life in much the same way that the slave masters in Lincoln’s day held the power of life and death over their slaves.

But there can only be one winner in a war. Which side will prevail?

A house divided cannot stand … and the judgments of the Lord are true and righteous altogether.
