Have you ever wondered what the oldest restaurant in Orange County is? Well, look no further because Newport Beach has the oldest restaurant with their hidden gem, “A Restaurant.” Open since 1926, this is the oldest operating restaurant in Orange County.
This location was originally created as a service station and restaurant. Construction began in 1925 under its former name, “The Arches.” That very same year the Coast Highway opened up from Newport Beach to Huntington Beach.
James Sturgeon and John Vilelle were the original founders of “The Arches.” In a contest advertised by the founders in the Balboa Times, 10-year-old Victor Chatten came up with the most promising name, “The Arches.” The original foundation of this restaurant had a very distinct Mediterranean style, with red tile roofs and arches, which quickly made it a memorable location of Newport Beach as it helped inspire and shape the town in its early development.
As “The Arches” got its upstart, it was a basic roadside diner. This eatery and the menu have flourished together with favorites like seafood and steak. This restaurant began getting more and more popular with bringing in celebrities during the 40s, 50s, and 60s, and was loved for its French food by the early 1970s.
Putting “A Restaurant’s” history aside, there are plenty of dining choices offered to the citizens of Orange County. “A Restaurant’s” main courses during dinner include dishes like the jumbo diver scallops, Skuna Bay salmon, pan seared branzino, Niman Ranch “carnitas”, Long Island duck, Mary’s organic chicken, and Imperial Wagyu flat iron. However, if you are not looking to eat in as exotic of a fashion there are more options including soup, steak, salad, burgers, and sandwiches.
After you have enjoyed a great lunch or dinner why not try one of “A Restaurant’s” delightful desserts. Some of the favorites are banana chocolate bread pudding, goat cheese cheesecake, black and white sundae, pistachio pudding, and assorted flavors of house ice cream and sorbet.
While its functionality and appearance have changed over the years, it promise to the community and their customers have not. Now, “A Restaurant” continues to be about its rich history and making the destination the best version of itself it can be. “A Restaurant” continues its tradition of providing world class food at a cheap price in a clean, beautiful atmosphere, and brings a simple, wonderful dining experience to guests every time.
