"Not that I have already attained, or am already perfected, but I press on that I may lay hold of that which Christ Jesus has also laid hold of me. Brethren I do not count myself to have apprehended, but one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead, I press toward the goal, for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus." Philippians 3:12-14
I recently started a job helping young adults who are developmentally delayed. I am grateful God has given me the job at the center helping these young adults, but not for the reason you might think. True, the added income is definitely a perk, but it's the students and their relentless pursuit of excellence that brings me the greatest joy. Although they have limitations, their spirit and drive to excel is amazing. If a task is difficult or challenging, they are generally very tenacious in their desire to conquer. Even when they are temporarily unable to complete a task or overcome an obstacle, their tendency is to return to it and try again, repeatedly if necessary. Set backs happen, but these kids are determined to prove their capabilities. I continually find them truly inspiring as they press toward being more self-sufficient and independent.
Working with them motivates me to do the very best at whatever task we are working to accomplish, and reminds me I should aspire to this goal daily. The Scripture "Whatever you do, do it heartily as to The Lord and not to men." (Colossians 3:23) often comes to mind. Pursuing excellence is something we encourage in academics and athletics, but it should be part of every aspect of our lives.
Just think how many lives would be changed if we each made it a daily goal to do everything as unto The Lord.
I don't know about you, but I think it's a goal well worth pursuing.
