Dependence on the government is continuing to rise as the latest USDA report shows that a record-breaking number of Americans are enrolled to receive food stamps. The report shows that almost 47.8 million Americans are receiving these benefits, that's 19.56 percent of eligible Americans and 15 percent of the country.
The US Department of Agriculture announced that 47.79 million people were enrolled in SNAP, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, in December. This is an increase of 1.18 million people from the 46.61 million Americans who were enrolled in SNAP at the end of 2011. Texas led the country with 4.04 million people dependent on food stamps in 2012. Calif. was next on the list with 3.96 million participants while Fla. had 3.35 million people enrolled in SNAP. RT.com reports that Washington, DC has the highest ratio of food stamp users. “With a population of 617,996 and 141,147 SNAP participants, about 23 percent of city residents were dependent on food stamps in 2012. Texas falls close to the national average, with 15.5 percent of its residents eligible to receive the assistance.”
