Real life monsters do exist. In fact they often live amongst us.
In West Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in the middle of a “blue collar” neighborhood where both lower income Americans and lower income immigrants coexist in their daily struggle to eke out a meager month-to-month existence, a modern day “House of Horrors” ran by an evil and remorseless 73-year-old physician turned butcher and murderer, existed and thrived under the operating guise of a women’s medical clinic for the poor and desperate.
At a news conference held on a bitterly cold day in January 2011, Philadelphia District Attorney Seth Williams announced to a shocked state and a shocked nation that on January 19, 2011, Dr. Kermit Barron Gosnell a Philadelphia-based physician, his wife and eight “medical staff” were arrested and charged with 9 counts of murder.
Of the 9 counts, 8 counts were for the crime of infanticide and 1 count was for the crime of murder of an adult. Included with the charges of murder were a variety of other offenses that are directly related to running an illegal abortion operation.
Gosnell’s adult murder charge stemmed from the death of 41-year-old Karnamaya Mongar, a refugee from Nepal who came to the clinic under the pretense of having a legal abortion performed. Mongar’s ultimate demise was the result of a fatal drug overdose (anesthesia) administered to her by one of Dr. Gosnell’s “medical staff” prior to her planned abortion.
Prosecutors from the District Attorney’s office stated that Gosnell, his wife and staff had been performing illegal abortions at the “Women’s Medical Society” located at 3801 Lancaster Avenue for over 31 years.
Investigative reports indicated that Gosnell and his wife made millions of dollars over a span of three decades performing illegal, late-term abortions. The Gosnells charged their patients anywhere from $300 to over $2,000 for the abortion. The fee for the abortion was generally determined by how late into the pregnancy the patient had become / the development of the fetus.
Gosnell performed dozens of abortions on a daily basis and worked mostly overnight hours. Investigators reported that it was not uncommon for Gosnell to (1) perform abortions on Sundays – a day that had less street traffic, therefore less peering eyes – and (2) allow “medical staffers” to perform the abortions without him being present.
Williams stated that conditions at the clinic were so unsanitary that members of the grand jury were required upon visiting the clinic to wear hazardous materials suits.
The DA’s horrific description of rooms in the “clinic” that served as storage rooms for dead fetus’ immediately conjured images of a mad scientist’s laboratory.
The gruesome spectacle only accentuated just how inhuman and callous Dr. Gosnell, his wife and staff had become to the illegal late-term abortions.
"There was a jar, jars lining shelves with severed feet that he kept for no medical purpose," said Williams. "There were fetal remains in the same exact refrigerator that the employees had placed their lunch in the same day."
District Attorney Seth Williams stated under oath that in some cases a teenager without medical training administered anesthesia to patients, a practice that explained the death / murder of 41-year-old Nepal immigrant Karnamaya Mongar.
Adding to the “witches brew” of human incompetence, documents released to the public revealed evidence that state regulators often ignored complaints about Dr. Gosnell and his staff and haven’t inspected his clinic since 1993.
Responding to questions of culpability from angry Philadelphians, DA Seth Williams explained at the news conference, “Unfortunately due to current Pennsylvania statutes of limitations, no charges so-far have been filed against former state regulators that were negligent in ensuring that Dr. Gosnell’s clinic was being run in compliance with federal and state laws that regulate health facilities”.
Giving detail to the horror of the infanticides committed at the clinic, Williams further explained that Dr. Gosnell “induced labor, forced the live birth of viable babies in the sixth, seventh, [and] eighth month of pregnancy and then killed those babies by cutting into the back of the neck with scissors and severing their spinal cord.”
Williams: “Most of the patients were unaware that their babies were born alive and then murdered. Many of the women were told that they were 24 weeks pregnant, even when they were further along”.
On May 15, 2013 Dr. Gosnell was sentenced to life without the possibility of parole for his gruesome crimes against humanity. He will live the rest of his life behind prison bars, condemned to have the “ghosts” of the babies and woman he killed visit him each and every night. We can only hope their cries will never allow him to sleep.
My mother once told me that “I should never be afraid of the dead because the dead cannot hurt us, instead I should be afraid of the living because it’s the living that can kill you”. If that’s the case then we all should be very grateful that Dr. Gosnell is locked securely behind steel bars for the rest of natural days. And even after his natural days may he be cursed to live in a realm that hates baby killers. You see, there are real life monsters and Gosnell proves it. Have a safe Halloween.
As always the New Orleans Examiner is interested in what you think. If ghosts are real will Dr. Kermit Gosnell be haunted by the innocent lives he took? Inquiring minds wanna know. Sound off.
Until next time, Good day, God Bless and Good Fishing.
