Just one day after he was nominated by the Wicomico County Republican Party, State's Attorney candidate Matthew Maciarello announced his withdrawal. In a published report, Matthew said, "I would not have entered this race if I knew the race would devolve into free-for-all attacks against candidates that I respect."
Matthew extends a disappointing streak for local Republican voters, who were excited about Sam Vincent's willingness to challenge longtime incumbent State's Attorney Davis Ruark before Vincent was killed in a June auto accident.
This move by the upstart Maciarello will leave Republicans out of the process of selecting a new State's Attorney. Ruark faces W. Seth Mitchell for the Democratic nomination on September 14, with the winner being unopposed in the November election.
Ruark was seen as vulnerable in this election after a 2008 incident where he was stopped for DWI and found to be in possession of a loaded gun. He took a brief leave of absence afterward.

I didn't know that Seth was running against Ruark. He may be a long shot, but if Seth wins, we will all be better off. The only thing the county would lose is a fine defense attorney. But we would all gain a great States Attorney.
