A profile of sculptor Syd Dunton

S. Dunton: "Bumpy table"

Although Syd Dunton admits to being an established artist, he claims his art will never “mature.”  “My work is always evolving,” he says.  “I try new things, constantly.”  As a sculptor who works in wood, Syd’s pieces range from intricately crafted studio furniture to a flat-bottomed boat he made with his grandson.  Syd’s work sells briskly in galleries such as Made in Pescadero and Gallery M in Half Moon Bay.  He recently sold a piece at the inaugural show of the Silicon Valley Artists Collaborative.

Syd’s studio is filled with wood.  Slices of an enormous tree with the bark still attached dry in neat stacks near the door.  A row of windows lets in the afternoon light.  A work table in the center of the room holds his latest project: a sculpture made of interlocking, multi-colored wooden puzzle pieces.  “I’m experimenting with color,” he says, pointing out the shades of pale green and red that stain the sculpture.

A native South Bay resident, Syd has lived most of his life along the spine of the Santa Cruz Mountains, from Los Altos to Saratoga to his current home in the rural area outside Los Gatos. While in college, he started three-dimensional work, which eventually led him to become a sculptor.  After he received his Bachelor of Arts degree in jewelry making, Syd went on to complete a master’s in sculpture with an emphasis in ceramics, and eventually taught all aspects of clay sculpture at Foothill College in Los Altos, his home town.

Nowadays, he spends his time in his studio, where pine trees line the deck outside, turning out his one-of-a-kind sculptures.  Surely the unique beauty of his mountain home contributes to Syd’s artistic sensibilities.  Visit Syd’s website, www.tridentdesigns.com, to view more of his work.
