Well known author of the multimillion-selling book “The Purpose Driven Life” Rick Warren, loses his son to suicide. Rick Warren is the pastor of mega-church Saddleback Valley Community Church. And in 2008 the church sponsored a nationally televised presidential forum with Barack Obama and John McCain.
On Friday April 5, 2013 Matthew Warren, the youngest of three children, shot and killed himself. In an open letter to his church Warren said Matthew Warren, 27, took his own life at his Mission Viejo, CA. home. According to USA Today, Warren wrote that their son had enjoyed a fun Friday evening with him and his wife, Kay, but Matthew then returned home to take his life in “a momentary wave of despair.”
Warren family statement:
“Only those closest knew that he struggled from birth with mental illness, dark holes of depression, and even suicidal thoughts. In spite of America’s best doctors, meds, counselors and prayers for healing, the torture of mental illness never subsided.”
To Kay and Rick Warren: The importance of a personal relationship with Jesus Christ is paramount in the healing process from the deep pain of grief. God will see you through.
