The pound cake got its name because when the ingredients were added to the mixing bowl they were all equal. There was a pound of flour, a pound of sugar, a pound of butter and a pound of eggs to create the basic recipe.
Today there are many variations to the traditional pound cake. Other ingredients have been added to bring more flavor and aromas to the cake. Baking soda has also been added to make the cake lighter that the traditional dense pound cake from years gone by.
Every year on March 4 the nation celebrates a food holiday called “National Pound Cake Day”.
One of the first pound cakes was created by the British which included dried fruits. Southerner’s adapted that recipe in the 1700’s making it one of the most popular dessert cakes served at home and in restaurants.
Pound cake can be baked in many different shaped pans but today the loaf pan is the most commonly one used. The cake is much easier to slice and can be equally divided between the number of people being served.
