“They went to a place called Gethsemane, and Jesus said to His disciples, ‘Sit here while I pray’ ” (Mark 14:32)
The Garden of Gethsemane – a place where Jesus went to spend time to be alone with the Father and to pray. Do you have such a garden? I call it a retreat. My retreat is a Lay-Z-Boy in my study surrounded by an end table and a table lamp piled with bibles, devotionals and study guides. The most important part of my day is the 30-45 minutes I spend with the Lord each morning in prayer, study and meditation. It is a wonderful way to start my day, a time I always look forward to, regardless of what the rest of the day is shaping up to look like. It helps me to “abide in Him” the rest of the day. So, I ask again, do you have a retreat where you can go to regularly to spend time alone with God? If you don’t, I encourage you to find a place, and then find a time, to separate yourself from the daily distractions that keep us from abiding in Him. I’m a morning person, so starting my day in my retreat with God works best for me. My friend and coworker, who is not a morning person, closes his office door every lunchtime and takes out his bible and reads while having his lunch. Find a place, find a time that works for you, protect that time and you will find that you’ll come to value that time, as will your Creator.
“Remain in me, and I will remain in you.” (John 15:4)
