While writer-director David Twohy is known for creating dark, horror-thriller movies, his new film – A Perfect Getaway – is a bit of a switch: while still a thriller, it’s filmed primarily in bright Hawaiian Islands sunlight. Specifically, Twohy chose Kauai’s “Garden Isle” sunshine to light the film, and the movie's premise came to him while vacationing there.
Having read that a good portion of the filming was actually done on Puerto Rico, this writer’s deep affection for Kauai was prepared to feel “cheated” by the movie’s location shots. This was not the case, however, and Twohy deserves kudos for seamlessly stitching together Puerto Rico action footage with Kauai backdrop shots. In fact, experiencing the film was akin to taking an island helicopter tour, save the expense and the queasy stomach!
The stomach sensations invoked by A Perfect Getaway are more of the knotted variety. The tension-packed feature opens with a pair of lovebird honeymooners (played by Steve Zahn and Milla Jovovich) on an up-close-and-personal helicopter tour of Kauai’s Waimea Canyon. This natural wonder – “the Grand Canyon of the Pacific” according to Mark Twain – is gorgeous, and its possible Twohy received special access courtesy of the Kauai Visitors Bureau to fly deep within the canyon. The opening footage provides a view not usually afforded mere tourists, and the scene will undoubtedly encourage people to add Kauai to their “must visit someday” lists.
The two honeymooners then embark on a three-day hike of Kauai’s Kalalau Trail, and shortly after beginning the hike they overhear others talking about the recent brutal double-murder of another honeymooning couple on neighboring Oahu. As the film progresses, two other hiking couples cross their path, and suffice to say fear and suspicion rule the day (and night).
You’ll find no spoilers here. It’s a thriller, and a well done one, in my opinion. Both Zahn and Jovovich contribute compelling performances, as do Timothy Olyphant and Kiele Sanchez as one of the other couples sharing the trail. At its essence, A Perfect Getaway is a twists-and-turns, character-based whodunit with Kauai’s stunning scenery as the backdrop. If either or both of those appeal to you, make the effort to see the movie on the big screen.
While there are no spoilers here, what you will find if you want to follow along is some further information about the two Kauai natural attractions highlighted in the film (Waimea Canyon and the Kalalau Trail) AND about two contests you can enter for a chance to win a free trip to Hawaii and do some Kauai sightseeing for yourself.
