“Why don’t you sit outside in one of our cabanas, it’s so nice out there tonight,” asked Adam Cohen, the amiable food and beverage director at Esterel at Sofitel Los Angeles. We had gone to the restaurant to sample the special French wine dinner menu which began with drinks in the newly revamped Riviera 31 bar. One of LA’s most popular watering holes for the young, rich and celebrated, the vibe-bracious bar was pulsating to a twerkable beat. And while we enjoy a lively spot, sitting outside in a peaceful cabana and being able to hear each other speak seemed preferable.
So out we went with Adam escorting us and offering a choice of French wines, Champagne or cocktails. We opted for the bubbly which was obviously the right choice evinced by the twinkle in Adam’s eyes as he told us about his newest label , Thienot, a rare champers that’s well known in France but is just being getting recognized locally.
He brought the bottle to our table, poured the pink bubbly into our glasses and waited for a reaction. “Wow,” said the Diva, “This is great.” Adam smiled and walked away to get us an appetizer of assorted French cheeses with fresh figs and compotes to go with our beverages. Then he left us to enjoy, which we did.
Following a second glass of champagne and a switch to a perfect martini for Richard, we walked the few steps to Esterel, the hotel’s French Mediterranean restaurant. A stunning showcase for Normady, France-born Chef Marius Blin, who has done an amazing job creating a world-class menu of organic food and products, Blin is a formidable, enthusiastic culinary master really looks like he enjoys creating dishes that please, and he did for us.
We started with a tuna carpaccio and tartine of prosciutto and moved on to a heavenly halibut served with lovely fresh vegetables and a fresh salmon cooked just right. We sipped French wines and savored the evening. Dessert with a rich and sinful chocolate creation.
After dinner we stopped briefly in the lively lounge where the young and restless were sipping cocktails or wine accompanied and a band was playing contemporary tunes. Riviera 31 definitely owns the bar scene while Chef Blin and his French cuisine own the culinary show.
