Having fun never sounded so good for the Tutorpedia Foundation as it hosts its annual FUNraiser dedicated to support the Foundation’s work to assist low income students.
With live performances and the opportunity to win raffle prizes and auction items, the event offers attendees the chance to win sports tickets and weekend getaways.
The FUNraiser will be held this year at Café du Nord, in San Francisco, on October 5. Donors, teachers, students, and Bay Areas residents are invited for a night of fun featuring local bands Guella and Antioquia, singer/songwriter Nadine, and Spoken Word by Dre from Youth Speaks.
Founded in 2009, Tutorpedia Foundation is the nonprofit partner of Tutorpedia, a one-on-one Bay Area tutoring organization. The Foundation is dedicated to helping low-income students improve academically, while also increasing their confidence and motivation. During this past year, the Foundation provided approximately 1,000 hours of tutoring to more than 60 students. Over 90% of their students report increases in grades and test scores.
Nationally, 50 percent of low-income students drop out of high school. Michelle Rhee, Bill Gates, and Newark’s Mayor Cory Booker are currently deeply engaged in reforming our educational system. They recently shed light on its problems during the Oprah Winfrey Show dedicated solely to discuss the problems of education in America, and declared education to be our current Civil Rights Movement.
Tutorpedia Foundation’s President, Seth Linden, explained that the current educational system must be reformed or entirely overhauled. After years of teaching and tutoring, he created Tutorpedia to make education more personal, which later expanded to the nonprofit Tutorpedia Foundation. The Foundation takes a holistic approach to the positive development of each student.
“We know the positive impact that one-on-one tutoring can make”, explains Seth Linden in his welcome video on Tutorpedia’s website. According to education researchers Benjamin S. Bloom and Peter A. Cohen, one-on-one tutoring is the most effective way to learn.
Door entry is $10 and offers attendees the opportunity to win raffle prices and bid on auction items. All proceeds from the FUNraiser benefit free tutoring for low-income Bay Area students.
