Los Angeles has a new charter middle school serving grades 6-8 and the time is "now" to check them out. Urban Village Middle School (UVMS) officially opened it's doors for the 2013-2014 school year on August 13, 2013. They currently have open enrollment with no waiting list but time is of the essence since spaces are filling fast!
Urban Village Middle School takes pride in their approach in educating our future leaders. With character building as a strong focus, they believe in fostering in environment where the students find and exercise their voices productively and as a result become accountable to self and others. From there, UVMS believes students become "teachable" and "coach-able" enabling them to reach their highest individual potential as a team.
To ensure success towards their goals, UVMS has established "The Center for Student Development" encompassed within three main focuses:
UVMS is making a great impression on current parents and students. Parents, grandparents, teachers, and students attended the first PTA meeting of the school year and each had only positive and inspiring words to say about the school's faculty and program.
More awe-inspiring were the commendations from parents about their rejuvenated students and from students about their teachers and new school.
"I like the teachers at Urban Village, it's smaller than my old school and it's better because there's less students in the classrooms," said seventh-grader Mikayla Davis
"My school is fun and unusual, that's what I like about," said seventh-grader Dakyra Baker.
First impressions have definitely become lasting ones. "We want our students to have a good time learning, they should enjoy coming to school, and we're going to have fun," UVMS Principal and CEO Charletta Johnson said during orientation. Now a month into the school year, parents and students confirm UVMS is where they want to be for education. It looks like the new school is in for an awesome first year.
"It's refreshing to see my child hop up early in the morning excited about going to school," one mother commented and received multiple nods of agreement from other parents.
"I have not had to drag my daughter out of bed in the morning, she's now waking me up!" said another parent.
The school provides a unique schedule where core classes are attended Monday through Thursday and Friday's focus on Connections and electives.
Electives include classes such as Yoga, Drama, Dance, Spoken Word, Culinary Arts, Sports, and more!
Urban Village further supports their ideals of character development and freedom of expression by offering a free dress code, that's right no uniforms! Students and parents are only expected to use practical judgement in selecting clothing, such as clothes free of offensive, vulgar, and/or profane wording or pictures.
