The Old Testament is a story—a good story—about God’s people. These were people like you and me. They had problems, they tried their own solutions, and eventually they realized that without God, everything is futile.
These folks were not heroes. They were regular people with a special purpose given by God. These folks did not live chapter and verse. They struggled, failed, were victorious, mourned, celebrated, felt joy, and felt pain.
The story in a story is not a synopsis of the Old Testament. It is a perspective. We didn’t just download Christianity to our computers and check for updates each year. We have an individual faith story and we have a collective faith story. Our faith story goes back several thousand years, but both are important.
We should not expect all of those whom we read of in the Old Testament to be flawless examples for all time. They were men and women, and just as we all have members of our own families with gifts, talents, flaws, frailties, and uniqueness; so does our faith family.
So do not forgo the reading of the Old Testament. Dive into it with renewed vigor knowing that it is not only a good story about God’s people and their lives and struggles long ago; it is also our story.
