A new place to see and hear jazz in Venice has opened up. It is called the RG Club and it is located on 2536 Lincoln Boulevard. They are offering jazz from guitarist Julian Coryell on Thursday nights and from saxophonist Azar Lawrence on Fridays and Saturdays. Real estate entrepreneur Brad Neal is the owner and he plans to keep the venue open through at least February.
There are plans in the works for a major renovation to the stage and dining areas. This is good news to hear. The west side of Los Angeles has some nice spots for this music including: UCLA's Royce Hall and the Kirk Douglas Theatre in Culver City, among others. It is always nice to have an intimate place to enjoy jazz music and this just adds to the overall experience. I wish them well and hope they have a long and successful run.
There are a few notable shows tonight on the docket in southern California. The Charles Owens Quartet has an 8pm show at the Barbara Morrison Performing Arts Center in Los Angeles. Also at 8pm, the George Kahn Quintet performs at Catalina Bar & Grill in Hollywood. There is a 9pm show at the Blue Whale in downtown Los Angeles and it features John Beasley's Monk'estra, a Big Modern BAND.
