Imagine going to an open-kitchen gourmet restaurant where cooking lessons are in full swing, there is event catering, two rental kitchens are creating food, and you can pick up a hot, flaky pastry and made to order specialty coffee’s and tea’s in a European style bistro – all under the same roof! It’s happening in Falls Church, Va., at Open Kitchen.
Once you step inside Open Kitchen you are greeted by friendly staff. They guide you to either sit at the open kitchen counter to watch the cooking process or you can be seated at tables with a ringside view of what’s happening in the kitchen. Everything is open at Open Kitchen and it is fun and interesting to watch Executive Chef Bernard Henry and Chef Matt Finarelli prepare succulent chicken tenderloins with lemon-maple sauce, create a delicious and satisfying vegetarian cauliflower steak with spiced cauliflower mash, work the grill to cook beef, tuna and lamb burgers to perfection, or toss a mixed green salad with dried cranberries and a sweet vinaigrette that is light and flavorful at every bite.
The open-kitchen concept began when owner, Hue-Chan Karels found it next to impossible to rent a commercially licensed kitchen in the Washington, D.C., metro area, so she could start a cookie business. She soon learned that kitchen rentals are hard to come by, and as she met other professional chefs and people in the food industry it became clear that she wanted to open a place where chefs could rent commercial space and consumers could eat and see first hand how great food is prepared.
In addition to the restaurant and kitchen rental, Open Kitchen has cooking instructors who teach cuisines from around the world; you can take Indian, Italian, French, African and Asian cooking lessons. There are dessert making classes where you can learn how to make delectable pastries, mouthwatering pies and cakes taught by pastry chefs, and there are also cooking lessons available for children.
Open Kitchen is located at 7115 Leesburg Pike in Falls Church. Why not start your day with a freshly brewed cup of coffee from the Open Kitchen’s Bistro, stop back by for lunch, make a reservation to have dinner and sign-up for one of the culinary cooking classes.
