A new era in aviation

A new era in aviation has been launched with the opening of the Next Generation (NextGen) air traffic control technology, software and systems development project at the Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA) Florida Test Bed Facility.

Specifically, the cutting-edge facility was established through a partnership between the FAA, Embry-Riddle and the Daytona Beach International Airport.

The NextGen focus is on developing new concepts and improving the capabilities for air traffic navigation, surveillance, communications and overall management systems. This includes:

• Changing from a ground-based radar system to an automated, satellite based surveillance one
• Developing more efficient routes through airspace
• Enhancing data communication capabilities between aircraft and the ground to reduce the overall workload for controllers and pilots
• Creating shared and distributed information technology infrastructure and architectures

One of the hallmarks of Next Gen is that it has leveraged private and public sector resources including academic expertise. In fact, the Government Accountability Office (GAO) has stressed the importance of collaboration within the industry and NextGen partner agencies. The Office believes that, especially with private sector involvement, the benefits will include efficient delivery timelines and the saving of a significant amount of money.

Another benefit of the project is the potential for jobs, according to US Rep. John L. Mica (R-FL), Chairman of the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee. In a recent press release, he stated that with NextGen “we have the potential for one of the most significant high paying job opportunities since the start of the space program.”

Spurring NextGen is the conviction by the nation’s lawmakers and other stakeholders that the US needs the most efficient aviation system possible. NextGen will draw on the most dynamic expertise and experience available in the government, private and academia arenas to make that happen. The benefits in ensuring more safety, better efficiencies and a stronger overall aviation environment, will be felt by all.
