Season 18 of “Dancing with the Stars” on ABC is now in the history books. The two-hour season finale Tuesday night was jam-packed with dance routines from the participating celebrities. The three finalists: Amy Purdy and Derek Hough, Candace Cameron Bure and Mark Ballas, and Meryl Davis and Maksim Chmerkovskiy danced their 24-hour fusion dance in the last hour before the crowning moment.
One of many highlights during the grand finale was seeing “live” for the first time the Team Loca’s” dance. During Latin Week this was the time Amy injured her back during the live telecast, and was rushed to the hospital. Instead, the producers were forced to show a dress rehearsal video of their performance. It was great seeing it once again.
Charlie White and Meryl finally danced for the first time together in the ballroom. Unfortunately it was only featured briefly as a bumper routine during a returned commercial break. Many on social media have expressed they should have danced longer. Obviously time was a factor. Meryl had to get ready for her final dance later on.
Speaking of Charlie White, they reprised their “Mary Poppins” dance from Disney Week. Host Tom Bergeron stated Dick Van Dyke, who originated his role in the film 50 years ago, was impressed by Charlie’s interpretation. Cody Simpson performed his hit song “Surfboard.” This time it was as a musical guest, instead of on the dance floor. His pro partner Witney Carson was one of the backup dancers.
Season 17 DWTS champion Amber Riley sang and danced with some of the best dancers in the industry. This was to a Walgreens-sponsored dance production (similar to Macy’s Stars of Dance) that had to be one of the best numbers ever presented on the show.
Finally the moment had arrived with the final results. Candace and Mark placed third overall. Amy and Derek were runner-up. Meryl Davis and Maks Chemkovskiy are the new champions of DWTS. Congratulations Meryl and Maks.
