It is impossible to deny the cultural impact of Jean Shepherd’s 1983 film A Christmas Story, based on the novel In God We Trust, All Others Pay Cash. It has inspired mountains of merchandise (electric leg lamp, anyone?), sequels, a stage adaptation, a Broadway musical, annual fan conventions, and a museum dedicated to showcasing the film’s memorabilia.
A Christmas Story is still watched on television by millions of people every year. How did a low-budget film that received lukewarm reviews and mediocre box office returns upon its original release end up becoming an annual tradition for families across the world? Just in time for the iconic film’s 30th anniversary, Caseen Gaines is providing fans of Shepherd’s most famous work with a fascinating look at the production and legacy of A Christmas Story.
Featuring exclusive interviews with cast members, previously unreleased photographs from the movie set and forewords by Wil Wheaton and Eugene B. Bergmann, A Christmas Story: Behind the Scenes of a Holiday Classic ($29.95) is more fun than a thousand Red Ryder carbine action two hundred shot Range Model air rifles!
A bit of trivia: Shepherd voices Ralphie as an adult.
