All women will experience menopause during their lifetime, as it is a natural part of the aging process. When menopause occurs, the ovaries reduce in function and begin to produce smaller amounts of these hormones. As the hormones begin to decline, hormone levels fluctuate and eventually the body stops producing them altogether. A woman’s monthly menstrual cycle ends and so does her ability to conceive. The process of menopause happens in two stages.

The perimenopause stage or premenopause stage is considered a transitional stage that refers to the time before and leading up to menopause. This stage may last from as little as 5 years to as many as 15 years and can begin as early as mid 30’s. During this time, the ovaries begin to reduce their production of follicles, eggs, estrogen and progesterone. Along with the reduction of the previously listed, women may also begin to experience physical and emotional symptoms associated with menopause. Some of these menopausal symptoms include hot flashes, mood and sleep disturbances and changes to libido. Menopause can also make women more prone to developing health conditions such as osteoporosis, heart disease and stroke. Once this stage is complete, women experience a second stage of menopause known as post menopause.

During this stage the body no longer produces estrogen and progesterone and a women is no longer fertile. The fluctuating and lower levels of estrogen and progesterone can lead to a wide variety of symptoms because they are responsible for many functions within the body. Along with the health risks and symptoms there are positive health effects of menopause.

Symptoms of menopause develop gradually as menopause is not an overnight process. As your body becomes used to the new hormone levels these symptoms may begin to reduce. One effect the fluctuating hormone levels can have on your body is hot flashes. Hot flashes are not dependent on the environmental temperature, but on the imbalance of homeostasis within your body. Menopause may also lead to a decline in bone mass, which occurs naturally as you age, but menopause increases this by 5%. Along with these symptoms there are many psychological symptoms a woman may experience such as mood swings, irritability and fatigue. Once these symptoms occur it is smart to get a diagnostics test to determine the presence of possible health conditions associated with menopause.

These tests confirm the menopausal stage and can lead women to treatment options for menopausal relief from any of the above listed symptoms and those not mentioned. Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) is one option, but once the implant of hormones has been administered it cannot be removed; therefore, it may be difficult to adjust hormone levels if required. Along with this aspect of HRT, there are many other side effects brought on when using this option and it may produce stronger effects of natural menopausal symptoms. Therefore, HRT needs to be strongly considered before beginning. Of course there are other products out there aside from HRT that may be used, but just as HRT they are associated with a large list of side effects. Supplements are always an option and they usually come with fewer side effects.
