As many of you know beer-appreciation is an obsession that rivals running. Just look at last years articles such as Gear & Beer Tri-state Fallfest and Oktoberfest in Western PA. This year is no different but there's exciting news coming from the land down under. Researchers have infused beer with more electrolytes. What this means is better recovery after physical exertion and potentially lessening hang-overs.
It seems everyone has a remedy for a hangover, whether it be greasy food and water, sports drinks or even PediSure, the key is to rehydrate yourself. Well researchers in Queensland, at Griffith University's Health Institute have identified more than just a college student's weekend, they found that blue-collared workers tend to finish their day of physical labor with beer. People are also found to have something refreshing, such as a beer, after sports and exertion. Helping a friend move this weekend? I'll grab a 6-pack. Sound familiar?
While beer can hydrate and replenish carbs, too much of it can dehydrate and harm the body. This innovation with injecting electrolytes into beer is promising for those that enjoy a good brew after a day's work, however it will also come at a cost. The beer that was found to be best at hydrating is an electrolyte injected beer with lower alcohol content, between 2-3%.
Hydrating beer may be a fad or a whole new industry. Either way, it's a little fun for those of us that enjoy the fruits of exercise and a good brew. Cheers!
