A nation of millions couldn't hold back Public Frenemy on Saturday night

The first bout of the Bellingham Roller Betties 2012 season on Saturday night featured the home town FLASH taking on Public Frenemy of the Terminal City Rollergirls out of Vancouver, BC. And if you didn't believe the hype surrounding Public Frenemy leading into the bout, you came out of it a firm believer, for sure.

It didn't take long for the visitors from the Great White North to get going. In only the second jam of the game, Deathly Innocent went on a 22-0 scoring rampage that put her squad up by 26 mere minutes into the game. Miata Smackya did show some life for FLASH in the 4th jam of the first half when she picked up an 8-0 decision to pull her team back to within 17 points. But that was about all the scoring life FLASH had in the first half. A first half that ended with everything going right for Public Frenemy and everything horribly wrong for FLASH as the home town jammers spent a good chunk of time in each of the final four jams of the half sitting in the penalty box while Public Frenemy made them pay dearly by closing-out the first half on a 42-0 scoring run. After 30 minutes of play, Public Frenemy held a commanding 98-13 lead.

FLASH did come out strong in the second half, going on an early 16-9 scoring run in the first five jams of the half. However, Public Frenemy soon resumed dealing blow after blow on the scoreboard. Didgeri Doom posted a 19-3 decision on the board for the TCRG house team in the 7th jam of the second half and torched the track for a 24-0 whuppin' in the 14th jam. When it was all said and done, Public Frenemy took a 186-54 win back home to Vancouver with them. No word yet as to whether or not they had to pay anything going through customs for that win, though.

Three Stars

3. Chic N Twisted. She was the best blocker for Public Frenemy on the night in my scorebook. She picked up 10 blocked jammers, opened two holes for her jammer to coast through and leveled an opponent with a big hit.

2. Dixy Dethdlr. She was an absolute force in the pack the entire night for FLASH. Although in a losing cause, the BRB all-star still managed to lead the game in blocking stats. I had Dixy down for 9 blocked jammers, 2 hole-opening blocks and buffed the floor with 6 Public Frenemy skaters during the bout. 10 points in two jams with the star on her lid wasn't too shabby, either.

1. Didgeri Doom. It was probably pretty obvious even to the greenest of roller derby fans that she was the best player in this bout. The Public Frenemy skater posted solid numbers as a blocker; 8 blocked jammers, 3 hole-opening blocks to make her jammers life easier and 1 big hit. And along with that, she also led the game in scoring, picking up 51 points in only 4 attempts. She can do it all, and certainly did on Saturday night.

Key Jam of the Game

I would have to go with Deathly Innocent's 22-0 thrashing in the second jam of the first half. It was pretty much all over at that point.

Bad Girls of the Game

I was flying totally solo on Saturday night, so the penalty stats may or may not be 100% accurate. But I had three FLASH players down with serving 4 minutes each in the pokey; Effin Sweet, Chick Slap and Dixy Dethdlr.

Since we are on her game here, I'd like to take this time and thank Effin' Sweet for picking me up at the train station in Bellingham on Saturday morning and taking me back there on Sunday morning! And almost everywhere else in between. And while I'm at it, I'll also thank referee extraordinaire Seymour Carnage for taking me from the gym to the afterparty. All help was greatly appreciated!
