The Rod Serling School of the Arts at Binghamton High School (BHS) will present the musical “The Secret Garden” on March 4th & 5th at 7:30 pm and on March 6th at 2:00 pm, at the BHS Helen Foley Theatre. Tickets are $8 general admission and $6 senior citizens and students. The Secret Garden, written by Frances Hodgson Burnett, was first published in series in 1910, and later as a novel in its entirety in 1911. Over the course of 100 years, the novel has since been adapted for various kinds of media arts such as audio books, radio plays, film and television, animation, and stage musicals. The Secret Garden has also been re-enacted many times as a musical by high school drama clubs and schools for the arts throughout the United States and Great Britain.
The Secret Garden is a story of 10 year old Mary Lennox who, through a winding maze of paths and a series of doors, discovers a secret garden tucked away on the estate where she lives in Yorkshire, England. The garden was neglected, overgrown and locked away. With the help of a servant boy, Mary begins to restore it. The unveiling of the garden opens Mary to a whole new world of adventure, fairy tale magic, and self discovery. Mary’s life, which had been dreary even before the death of her parents in India, was brought ‘back to life’ as she unearthed the secrets the garden holds.
