Come see the ship that appeared in two motion pictures, the best known ‘The Guns of Navarone’. The USS Slater maritime museum is docked in Albany NY. Dry docked over winter it will not be opening until early June.

The restored World War II destroyer escort ship housed 216 men. The ship is last of its kind afloat in the country. Ship armaments include three 3-inch/50-caliber guns, three twin 40 mm guns, nine twin 20 mm guns, 24-missile hedgehog, two depth charge racks and eight K guns. The museum tour provides a visit of crew quarters, officer’s country, gallery, radio room and bridge containing combat information center.

USS SLATER Overnight Camping Program provides an opportunity to follow a typical day in the life of a sailor. Participants will perform all the duties as a member of the ship. It includes sleeping overnight in crew quarters and meals on the mess deck. This is provided for a modest fee with advanced reservations required.

Here’s a brief history of the USS Slater. The 306’ long vessel is a Cannon-class destroyer of the U.S. Navy. It was built at the Tampa shipbuilding Company of Tampa Florida in 1943 and launched on February 13, 1944. It served was an escort ship at the start of World War II for convoys to the United Kingdom.

On completion of the war in Europe it was deployed for support operations in the Pacific. In 1947 it was assigned to a reserve fleet and in 1951 transferred to the Hellenic Navy by the Truman Doctrine. It performed patrol duty in the eastern Aegean until decommissioning in 1991. The ship was returned to the US as a museum ship and restored by volunteers for a permanent home in Albany.
