A Most Wanted Man a must-see for Hoffman fans

If you love a good spy movie, you won’t find better than a John le Carré novel adapted to screen, and if you need just one more chance to enjoy the acting genius of the late, great Philip Seymour Hoffman, than “A Most Wanted Man” is the film to see.

Set to release out in theaters in July, this spy thriller features Hoffman as Gunter Bachmann, a German Intelligence operative whose job is to track terrorist activity in Hamburg, a city le Carré spent time in as a political consul following a career as an intelligence officer in Britain’s MI5 and MI6. Entertainment Weekly claims early reviews promise the movie is everything fans expect from the talented Hoffman.

Le Carre’s story is best summarized here: “A half-starved young Russian man is smuggled into Hamburg in the dead of night with an improbable amount of cash secreted in a purse around his neck. He is a devout Muslim. Or is he? He says his name is Issa.

Annabel, an idealistic young German civil rights lawyer (played by Rachel McAdams), determines to save Issa from deportation, even if the price is her career—and her safety. Searching for clues to his mysterious past, she confronts the incongruous sixty-year-old scion of a failing British bank (Willem Dafoe)—and a triangle of impossible loves is born.

Meanwhile, scenting a sure kill in the “War on Terror,” the rival spies of three nations converge upon the innocents.” (A Most Wanted Man book summary)

The cast is rounded out by Robin Wright as a CIA agent and Grigoriy Dobrygin as Issa. Directed by Anton Corbijn (Control, The American), the film premiered at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival listed as one of the “Top 10 Films to See”. It promises intrigue, suspense, romance, and an intensely cerebral experience.

It seems fitting that the last Philip Seymour Hoffman movie that fans are left with is every bit as enthralling as his legacy in film.
