A mini-city occupies the Los Angeles County Museum of Art

Created by Chris Burden, the man responsible for the well-known Urban Light artwork that stands in front of LACMA, another piece of his art work has been featured in the same museum. Titled Metropolis II, it is a representation of the modern city with its tall infrastructures and miniature cars cruising down the roads. It is an art piece that puts into perspective the busy lives of the city people as car after car drives by, some of them even get stuck in their lanes, which is an instant reminder of the traffic that occur daily on the 405 freeway.

In fact, in an article written by fastcodesign.com, they were given the opportunity to speak to Burden about his idea for this project. He says that Metropolis II is touching on the issue of 'the free car,' which is the concept of going out and taking one's car anywhere they like and at any time. As the installation shows, these cars are moving at a certain pace as they head to their next destination. This seems to be the theme for everyone - people move from one location to another, using some form of transportation.

According to the LACMA website, Metropolis II will be an ongoing display, but do not procrastinate this visit. It is already catching the attention of museum goers who pull out their cameras and camera phones and snap pictures for their own collection. Children are also excited by the sight as they walk around and point at the fast-paced cars and the colorful buildings, it is probably a reminder of their own toys that sit at home.

This installation is currently on view at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art in the first level of the BCAM room. Due to proper maintenance, there are set times at which the cars operate and that schedule can be found here.
