Jillian Braedon and her five-year-old daughter, Valerie, are on the run from the FBI. The people who should have protected them want Jill dead because she possesses a secret that they don’t want revealed. When Jill and Valerie are stranded in the middle of a blizzard and Jill is badly injured, they fear that they might not get out of this alive. Valerie goes off into the storm alone and manages to find help. This is how John Mills, a retired musician-turned-recluse, enters their lives. He saves Jill and takes them both into his house. He soon learns that the FBI is after them, so he promises to keep them hidden. He even asks his friend, Mel Talbot, for help. He is a brilliant computer hacker, and he may well be their only hope of escaping the FBI.
‘Hidden Doors, Secret Rooms’ is the author’s debut novel. However, Jamie Eubanks proves that she is an amazing storyteller, by perfectly balancing the plot with the characters’ backstories, using techniques that help keep the fast pace of the novel, while also offering the necessary information. The characters are very realistic and relatable, especially Jill and John. Jill is a single mother, and John lost his wife and child in an accident. It’s easy to see how these experiences will bring them together and change their lives. Mel Talbot is also a very likeable character that readers will love the moment he is introduced.
Another aspect that makes this book hard to put down is the fact that the author manages to reveal the secrets and mysteries little by little, keeping the readers guessing until the very end. The conclusion will come as a huge surprise no matter how much attention the readers paid to all the details. It’s like a puzzle that is solved on the last page, making you want to read more of the author’s brilliant writing and hope that she will publish her next novel soon.
