A Mild Start To The New Work Week......But There's A Catch(There Always Is!)

The next seven days ahead

So we had sunshine give way to clouds this afternoon with some quick moving snow showers; if you looked at the radar around 1pm it looked abundant with snow, BUT the surface was so dry that snow fell aloft and then evaporated before reaching the ground. NOW another weird thing occurred as the radar returns pushed to the east and then it started to snow...

Snow showers pushed through early Sunday afternoon and provided a coating of snow in Philly

So how could that be? I told you before that the atmosphere was dry at the surface so the moisture evaporated, BUT what occurred aloft was that it was quite windy so the moisture was essentially "suspended" aloft and once the clouds exited the wind mixed down to the surface along with the snow! Officially Philly International received just a trace of snow, but areas to the north and west received about an inch.

If there is a silver lining to all of this is that the only way for temperatures to go is up for the next 24 hours(so you better enjoy it!); we have milder air working in thanks to a southwest wind and we'll get above freezing overnight into Monday with temperatures getting into the lower 40s along with some......RAIN! After how cold it's been and there's been a few inches of snow down for the past six days(AND roads in areas are still ice-covered) it's welcome relief to get rid of some of it! You know it's not going to last though....

Colder air will filter back in by sunset on Monday and temperatures plunge into the lower teens and despite plenty of sunshine on Tuesday it will only be in the upper teens; we will have a new low forming off of the Carolina coast and bringing the potential for some heavy snow.....down there. For us there will just be some high clouds Wednesday with highs in the lower 20s.

Thursday we crack the freezing mark and actually stay there for more than a day so on Friday with a quick moving clipper we'll have some light RAIN during the morning with highs in the lower 40s. Saturday will stay in the lower 40s with some rain in the afternoon leading into the overnight and into early Sunday; it gets out by the afternoon so if you actually have tickets to Super Bowl XLVII OR having a big party(invite me over!) there shouldn't be any issues getting there with highs around 40 and lows in the middle 20s.
