Hidden away in the jungle of Topanga Canyon, a gravel turnoff opens into Will Geer’s Theatricum Botanicum: one part garden, one part theater, and one part Hollywood history. Here you’ll find Los Angeles’ most spellbinding outdoor Shakespeare performances.
The entrance area is an open garden for guests to explore. Guests enjoy picnics and wine under a canopy of trees, twinkle lights, and old painted signs. On Midsummer performance nights kids dressed as sprites roam the garden trilling, dancing, and causing mischief. The magic of the environment wins over even skeptical theater goers.
The amphitheater is just as dreamlike. Trees grow through the floor of the stage. Staircases and staging areas wind up into the forest. Seats are first come, first served, so it’s smart to line up early to enter the amphitheater. It’s outdoor seating, so dress warmly.
A Midsummer Night’s Dream is full of magic, slapstick, sexual innuendo, and (literal) pompous asses. These seasoned actors make every line understandable. You don’t need to be a Shakespeare fan to be entertained.
Refreshments are available during intermission.
There are 4 performances of A Midsummer Night’s Dream left in the season. The last is Sept. 28th. Upper tier (farther from stage) tickets are $25 for adults, $10 for kids 7-12, and free for kids 6 and under. Lower tier tickets are $35 for adults, kids prices remain the same. KCRW membership discount is 2 adult lower tier tickets for the price of 1.
