A Merrie Monarch preview

Treat yourself to hula, and huli-huli chicken
Hula Halau O Lilinoe

Any hula halau (dance group) in Southern California that truly connects with its hula roots back to Hawaii, wants to someday compete in the annual Merrie Monarch Festival held in Hilo, Hawaii.

The Hula Halau O Lilinoe located in Carson has had the good fortune to be blessed with several trips back for that fifty-one year old hula competition. And, having the honor of placing in the top tier their kane (men) hula group.

This year, their Merrie Monarch Preview fundraiser will be on Saturday, April 12, 2014 at their event center located in Carson. It will begin at 1:00 p.m. and end at 4:00 p.m. Patrons will be treated to a taste of the hula talent that this halau presents, and, also a taste of one of the favorite dishes from the islands, its huli-huli chicken.

The weather has been beautiful, warm and sunny of late, so why not take advantage of it and plan your Saturday afternoon around the wonderful hula, some tasty huli-huli (spit barbeque) chicken and friendly local people?

Donation tickets are $10 each and a plate lunch of huli-huli chicken is also $10. Say Aloha to Auntie Sissy Kaio who is the Kumu Hula (master instructor) and her husband, Uncle Lincoln Kaio, aka Mr. Aloha.

Think of it this way: a round trip air fare to the islands will run upwards of $500 to $600 per person, not including accommodations, car rental and walking around money. For $20 this Saturday, you can bring that Aloha dream-like atmosphere to life by driving down to Carson, just off the 110 Freeway.
